About the Role
Metro Council WA is seeking a motivated Sustainability Projects Officer to join our Parks & Sustainability team. Reporting to Ben Abbott, Coordinator – Parks & Sustainability, you'll play a key role in advancing our environmental initiatives across our diverse metropolitan community of 85,000 residents.
This is an excellent opportunity for an environmental science or sustainability graduate to gain hands-on experience in local government sustainability programs. You'll be working on tangible projects that make a real difference in our community, from reducing food waste to enhancing our urban forest canopy.
As part of our ongoing digital transformation, you'll also have the opportunity to contribute to modernising how we deliver sustainability programs and engage with residents through innovative digital platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the food waste composting trial: Coordinate implementation across participating households, monitor collection data, liaise with waste management contractors, and prepare progress reports for council and state government stakeholders
- Support urban canopy audits: Assist with data collection using GIS mapping tools, coordinate with external arborists, and help develop tree planting prioritisation frameworks
- Prepare sustainability reporting: Compile quarterly and annual sustainability metrics, assist with grant applications for environmental programs, and contribute to council's annual sustainability report
- Community engagement: Support resident education campaigns, coordinate sustainability workshops, and help manage our social media presence for environmental initiatives
- Program administration: Maintain project databases, manage supplier relationships, and ensure compliance with state environmental reporting requirements
- Cross-departmental collaboration: Work closely with Planning & Development on green building initiatives and with Digital & Information Services on sustainability data systems
What You'll Bring
Essential Requirements: - Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Environmental Management, or related field - Strong project coordination skills with ability to manage multiple priorities - Excellent written and verbal communication skills for stakeholder engagement - Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and data analysis tools - Understanding of local government operations and environmental legislation - Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel across council areas for site visits
Desirable Qualifications: - Experience with GIS mapping software - Knowledge of waste management systems and circular economy principles - Previous experience in local government or community engagement - Familiarity with grant writing and government reporting requirements
